I have been out and about this week.

I have visited Al?s Hobbies in Stafford, this is the shop once occupied by Bagnalls ? you can contact them on the same number as before:- 01785 223349

The shop is stacked out with stock, mainly aircraft and cars but I did see a couple of superb ready to run boats ? very pricy-£200 plus.

A good range of radio in 35 and 40 meg with all accessories, batteries etc: are in stock.

Engines, mostly air cooled for aircraft and cars, though the manager tells me that they stock jet engines at their Hainault, Essex branch.

It looks as though this shop will be here for a while, the owners are

Hobby World Europe Ltd and this is the fifth branch to be opened.

Philip and I visited the NEC in Birmingham on Wednesday to see

Quicksilver Britains World Water Speed Record Challenger.

The aim of the Quicksilver project is to regain the World Water Speed Record for Great Britain and presently held by Australia and stands at 317.60 mph.

Nigel Macknight is the driving force behind the Quicksilver World Water Speed Record Challenge in more ways than one. Not only is he the initiator of the venture but he will also be at the controls of the multi million pound superboat for the record bid.

Quicksilver is powered by a Rolls-Royce Spey Turbofan which develops 25000 horsepower. This engine is already installed in the craft on display.

The craft is 12.87 m long 3.33m wide and 2.9m high and weighs 3.5 tonnes.

Quicksilver will be launched on to the water for the first time in the latter part of 2006, at which point low speed trials up to (100 mph) will begin.

Subject to the necessary approvals being granted, the record campaign will take place on Coniston Water in the Lake District in January?March 2008.

Sponsors, investors and supporters have already committed over £1.5 million sponsorship in cash and kind for the venture.
